Neville knew Professor Burbage would understand.

"He said he was going to kill Trevor!"

"Did he?"

"Yes. He hates me."

"Oh, dear." Charity stooped, looking directly into the boy's eyes. "Well, Neville, I don't think that he hates you. It's just that whenever Professor Snape sees a toad near a cauldron, his natural instinct is to cut it to pieces and throw all of its freshly oozing toady bits into the simmering brew."

Neville's eyes grew round.

"So," Charity winked, "perhaps it's best to leave dear old Trevor in Gryffindor Tower during Potions. What do you think?"

Gulping, Neville nodded.

Thank you! I think sometimes Severus has good reasons for doing what he does, he just suffers from a failure of empathy--and so fails to realize that dropping anvils on students' heads isn't always the most effective way to get the results he wants. Charity's being just as graphic, really, but she delivers it with honey instead of vinegar and a subtlety that puts her Slytherin beloved to shame. ;-)
