Severus looked critically at himself in the mirror. He was wearing his best clothes, freshly laundered and pressed. His hair had been washed and combed, and he had, after a very brief attempt during which he realised how large his ears looked, wisely decided to forego the Lucius-esque ponytail. He was even wearing cologne.

In his left hand he was holding a large bouquet of flowers and with his right hand he tugged at the collar of his shirt, nervously attempting to breathe.

All of his years in Voldemort's service was nothing compared to the sheer horror of this moment.

*****

He didn't know how he had managed to get to her door.

He wasn't aware of when he had knocked on it.

All he knew was that Hermione had opened it, looking so gorgeous that Helen of Troy would have seemed like a crone in comparison.

His eyes were prickling with the need to blink, but he couldn't. His mouth was moving, but no words would come out. His hands were shaking so badly that flower petals were falling into a little pile at his feet. She was saying something; her lips were moving, but he heard nothing.

Then, darkness.

*****

Severus found himself lying on a soft bed. The room was unfamiliar to him, decorated with wooden white painted furniture, frilly flowery pillows and useless little knick-knacks. It was all very female. Far more so than he would have expected from Hermione.

He had hoped that he might end up in her bed, but he had imagined it in quite a different way. Later in the evening. Preferably without his clothes. And definitely with her in the bed with him.

He could hear her rummaging about in the next room and wondered if he should get up and join her.

*****

"Severus! Stay where you are."

Instinctively he froze as if he had been trained to obey her every command, leg halfway to the floor. Then he obediently pulled his leg back up, settling down on the bed again.

Hermione helped him to sit up, leaning against the headboard, then summoned a large glass of water and a glass of cognac. She still looked like an angel sent from heaven and he couldn't stop staring. Not even when he spilled half his water in his lap. She had to help him get the glass to his mouth to drink the rest.

*****

When he was finished with the water, she took the glass from him and handed him the cognac instead. He longed to down it in one gulp, hoping it would make his hands stop trembling and the nervous butterflies in his stomach shrivel up and die. He couldn't do that in front of her. He wasn't exactly woman's dream of a companion to begin with and his unfortunate past was far from an improvement. He couldn't afford to look even worse in her eyes.

It was a miracle that she had asked him to accompany her in the first place.

*****

"Are you feeling better?" Hermione asked, concern evident in her voice. Severus marvelled at it.

"Yes, yes..." he managed after a few seconds when he realised that he probably ought to answer her.

"You should have just told me that you weren't feeling well," she scolded gently. "We could have rescheduled."

Even if he had been deathly ill and with broken limbs, Severus would not have done that. The risk that she would change her mind about him would have been too big. A slight loss of consciousness was definitely not going to stop him.

"I'm feeling quite fine."

*****

She looked a bit suspicious.

"But you just fainted."

Severus didn't really like the sound of that. Men, no matter how struck with terror or faced with women whose beauty far surpassed human language, did not faint. Severus might not be much of a man, but he was still a man, and Severus Snape did not faint.

"I didn't. I merely... stumbled."

She nodded. It was kind of her to pretend to believe him. "First time I've had my date faint at my feet." Alright, so she wasn't even pretending, but she looked so lovely that he didn't even care.

*****

"I did not faint," Severus insisted, finding again some of the confidence and courage that had seen him through several years of running the errands of both a tyrannic megalomaniac and a manipulative bastard. He leaned forward, imploringly. "I was struck by your beauty." It wasn't even a lie.

"You looked rather more terrified," Hermione said, smiling. "Like it was your first date or something."

How awkward. Severus squirmed slightly. She wasn't supposed to know that. Now she would be sure to call the whole thing off.

"It is, isn't it?" Hermione asked. "It's about time, then. Shall we go?"
